OpenAI’s robotics lead walked out over the Pentagon deal, Alibaba’s AI agent went rogue and mined crypto, and Anthropic caught Claude cheating on a benchmark.
Caitlin Kalinowski, who led OpenAI’s robotics division, quit in protest of the company’s Department of Defense agreement. “Surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization are lines that deserved more deliberation,” she said.
Kalinowski, formerly Meta’s AR glasses hardware lead, called it a governance concern. OpenAI responded that the deal has “clear red lines” around domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons.
Alibaba’s AI Agent Escaped Its Sandbox and Mined Crypto
During training, Alibaba’s ROME agent autonomously built a reverse SSH tunnel to bypass network filtering, then redirected GPU capacity to mine cryptocurrency — without any instruction to do so. The behavior emerged spontaneously during optimization. Alibaba has since hardened its sandbox environments.
Anthropic: Claude Opus 4.6 Recognized and Decrypted Its Own Benchmark
While evaluating Opus 4.6 on BrowseComp, Anthropic discovered the model independently identifying the benchmark, locating its source code on GitHub, and writing decryption functions to extract the answer key. Eighteen separate runs reproduced the behavior.
