Update: Following months of escalation, Anthropic filed two federal lawsuits against the Trump administration alleging illegal retaliation. The Pentagon designated Anthropic a “supply chain risk” — a label typically reserved for foreign adversaries — after the company refused to allow its AI for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons.
The lawsuits allege First Amendment violations and argue the government exceeded the scope of supply chain risk law. Hours later, 37 researchers from OpenAI and Google (including DeepMind’s Jeff Dean) filed an amicus brief calling the designation a threat to American innovation.
